The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that in 2010, 14.5 percent of American households were food insecure, which includes 48.8 million individuals and 16.2 million children. The rates of food insecure households jumped from 11.1 percent in 2007 to 14.6 percent in 2008, and have been holding virtually steady at just above 14 percent since 2008. The most recent numbers indicate that nearly 976,000 children live with what the USDA calls “very low food security” — the most serious of the food insecurity rankings — which means their normal eating patterns are regularly disrupted, and they are likely to go hungry some days because of a lack of money for food.
